HOTA Gallery is a new gallery, designed by ARM Architects in conjunction with landscape by Topotek1/Cusp. The 5,600m2 gallery is the largest public gallery outside of a capital city in Australia. It houses the City of Gold Coast’s collection of art and cultural artefacts in 3 permanent galleries, and provides large flexible spaces for touring exhibitions and a dedicated children’s gallery. Along with HOTA Central, the Outdoor stage and parkland it establishes HOTA as a significant cultural destination.
The new building is a vertical series of galleries over 6 levels - a visitor journey that starts with panoramic regional views from the rooftop bar, and travels down through the exhibitions via a glazed & generous stair.
MAAT developed a wayfinding strategy to respond to the circulation, building form and finishes palette. Based on the sign system developed for HOTA and documented in the HOTA Sign Manual the system was extended to respond to the larger volumes of the galleries, & applied in monochrome in the highly articulated and art filled spaces.
