As part of a broad strategy developed by Broken Hill Council to transform the economy of Australia’s First Heritage listed city, to support an active and vibrant community and to attract new visitors, residents, businesses and industries, Broken Hill Council engaged Neeson Murcutt + Neille and a diverse team to develop a cultural and design strategy and deliver a new library/archive and community hub.
MAAT has developed a wayfinding strategy and signage and graphic design for the new building and precinct. Positioned in the centre of the city, off Argent St the new building incorporates the Outback Archives, Council service desk and regional library service, engaging with the local population, district and visitors.
The signage reinforces the connection to the precinct and broader city through message content and sign placement. The design draws from key elements of the Broken Hill brand language, the existing Town Hall façade and the opportunities the new built form and spatial arrangement offers.
The project is currently at DA stage.
